save the penguins!

No, i haven’t seen March of the Penguins. And I’ll tell you something–i never will. Animal movies upset me. In a deep-rooted psychological way. I was dragged to the Lion King by my boyfriend through silent tears. You cannot fake silent tears–they are the tears of true fear. I was 18 when the movie came out. Yes, I liked it… but i dreaded seeing it. Obviously, it’s not necessarily how the animals are treated during filming since Lion King is a cartoon and elicited the same anxious feeling that all animal movies (and books for that matter) do. I just love love love animals, am extremely attached to my pets, and can’t stand the thought of an animal in mental (i.e., Homeward Bound) or physical peril.

Anyway, this amazing article came through Knitting News and I thought it was worth sharing. In Australia, wool sweaters are saving fairy penguins who have gotten caught up in oil spills. In fact, wearing a sweater has improved the survival rate for these guys to 98%! Someone should get this going on this continent… I’ll dig around and let you know what I find.

Sweaters were used to save the many water fowl that were affected by the oil spill of the Exxon Valdez in Alaska, the largest in US history.

Hi! If you think you don’t want to see March of the Penguins, DON’T! It is sad and upsetting. It is also beautiful and all that, but it is VERY disturbing, and I know that I cried and I think my husband did, too. We had been in the mood to see something “uplifting and cheery” — what a mistake! At least we were able to laugh at ourselves about that, through our rueful tears, as we left the theater.

Tonight I’m going to Red Bamboo with a friend for the first time! I’m so excited!

Hope you’re doing fabulously!
