Halloween!
2007 @ 9:15 pm
You crafty moms (or those that are really into Halloween) know what that means… frantic, obsessive, last-minute costume construction. I was all set to dress MJ in her too-big-last-years Monkey costume when my buddy Jennifer hit me with a splendid idea: have our daughters dress up at Thing 1 and Thing 2 from The Cat in The Hat! I’ve seen this before and couldn’t resist the idea of dressing the girls alike. And it seemed so simple. So simple indeed.
First, the union suits. Jennifer found those right away and ordered two in 18 months size. Only one was delivered. She magically found another on eBay that very day and it arrived in record time–size 12 months. Uh. Oh.
Next, what to do about the hair? We settled on hats with huge needles with blue wool roving pulled through and hair-sprayed. Why? Because fun fur would be too easy and didn’t occur to either of us until time was of the essence. Neither of us can stand that stuff anyway.
Chest panels… so obvious. The perfect opportunity to use my embroidery machine!
Let’s just list the problems we have thus far. Note that the time is 8 pm, October 30th.
- Will either child fit into 12 mo union suit? If not, a panel should be sewn in. Said union suits are shut in sleeping child’s bedroom closet in who knows which bin.
- Wigs–will this technique work? Who has the time to make these things? HEATHER! Hooray, we have a volunteer who seems to really want to help us out. Hey, the woman loves roving. And the girls. And she must really like me and Jennifer too. Or pity us.
- Chest Panels on wool felt. Will the machine accept the wool felt? Will I be able to maintain my sanity while experimenting?
Miraculously, it all came together. It was discovered Halloween morning that both union suits fit. For once, my embroidery machine completely lived up to expectations. And under pressure at that! Who cares that it took me until 1 am? These things are PERFECT and I am sure our toddlers will notice
. (For those that care, I used a sz 12 sharp needle and a layer of solvy stabilizer on top, although this wasn’t totally necessary. Be sure to hoop both tight like a drum!). Heather knits like the wind and these hats look better than anything Jennifer and I had conceived of.
Please note that this photo was taken by Mr. Sassy while I was not present. I assume he took it specifically for the blog–what a great guy, huh?
Since I didn’t make the hats, I am sketchy on the details. Its definitely Morehose Bulky yarn and its definitely an Elizabeth Zimmerman pattern.
Here’s a couple more shots of our gals enjoying the evening. And definitely NOT sharing.

Absolutely phenomenal - way to pull it together girls!!
Awww! MJ and P look so cute together!! Great job on pulling those costumes together so quickly!
I KNEW that you’d have a supercool costume for MJ! Best one I’ve seen this whole season, too. Kudos! We’re headed to Texas tomorrow, but let’s playdate when we get back.
Aww, so cute! I love the photo of the girls getting shoulder rides. Good work pulling everything together at the last minute!

So freakin’ cute! And so well executed. It’s always nice to see kids in costumes that aren’t “cutesy”, too. Nice!
They look so cute! I love Thing 1 and 2, they are two of my favorite Dr. Seuss characters.
