Child Resistant Chairs
2009 @ 6:12 pm
Remember all that home improvement stuff I said we were going to do back in August? Some of it has been done! I still need to take photos though. In the meantime, I did another small project I thought I’d share. Especially since I have photos of it.
Our table and chairs have been around FOREVER. They were first present in my great grandmother’s apartment in Queens, and after surviving a fire there, were stored for years and then came to live with my family. I vaguely remember the table and chairs in our dining room growing up–they have long since been replaced by a larger house-sized table from the other side of our family. I brought the set here to Brooklyn when Jason and I first moved in together. The table top is vintage Formica–my father, the cabinet maker, reckons it’s among the first ever made. The top of this table is pristine and I swear it looks like real wood. Scratches dissolve and it wipes clean easily. It proves a point that even Formica was better back then. The legs and lip are another story, but that’s for another day. Let’s talk chairs.
My dad replaced the original upholstery in the 90’s. With fabric my great-grandmother bought herself for that purpose. She died when I was very small. It looked terrific, almost too fancy, for about a week.
A few week ago, I recovered the chairs again with oilcloth. Durable, washable, oilcloth. Did you guys know that kids are messy? Sheesh! It’s a day of the dead theme, although it just looks like a floral at first glance.

Nice job on the chairs!! I love that they are a family heirloom of sorts and that you’ve preserved them.
