Japanese knitting patterns

Today I decided that I want to start knitting for the baby. I am sure this is related to the fact that I am done with Christmas knitting! Ok, i lied, there is one thing not finished, but there is no hope of getting that done before tomorrow. My in-laws will be here this afternoon and I am anxious to get something on the needles. Here’s the problem though–the patterns I am interested in knitting are in my japanese pattern books (bottom row), the ones my in-laws brought me from Japan.

Even though the Japanese use charts and the metric system, I have no clue where to start. So, I started poking around online, sure that I was not the first to encounter this problem. I went to the publisher’s first… no luck there. Then I did googled ‘Japanese knitting tranlation’ and came upon this site. There is an awesome section called All About Japanese Knitting Patterns. Herein is a dictionary of translations, explanation of yarn thickness, needle size, materials used, and a resource for reading Japanese charts.

This is overwhelming, to say the least!
