to a better future

My aunt and cousin came for a visit this weekend and it turns out most of the family has been knitting! I decided it would be a good time to go through the stash and gift out the yarns that I’m pretty sure I’ll never get around to using. The stash was getting out of hand–I mean, I’ve done a really good job at using us my 2006 Rhinebeck purchases, but I still have to knit up ALL of my MSW 2005 stuff! The yarn will be happy in its new home :) There are even some dude colors in there, which I hope will work out for my cousin Eric. Even he’s got the bug!

Anyway, say farewell…

I’ve gotten one sleeve nearly complete on my Kaitlyn sweater–just need to do a lace repeat and graft it to the cuff. Time to start thinking ahead!

First, I must wind my hand dyed yarn. I realize that i will be making quite a small pinwheel blankie. I’m thinking that’s not a very big deal at all–it will be for decoration mostly anyway.

Next, I’ve got another baby shower coming up! I’ll be casting on for this beauty from Knitting for Two for a special little lady to arrive in June :)

Lastly, I need a lace pattern for a table runner! My poor coffee table is suffering. It’s an antique, leather top table that has been in my family for quite some time, but has been battered in our house. I will stop there. I even went so far as to cover the table in glass. Unfortunately, the table does not lie flat so when the glass slips, as it often does, it is inevitably scratched again. It pains me greatly. So, I am making it a cover. The glass will sit atop the runner, which will actually be more like a tablecloth. I have two skeins of Knitpicks Shimmer in Deep Woods for the job.

yea yea, I’m not supposed to buy new yarn… I know. But I didn’t have any lace weight in the stash! That doesn’t account for what i bought from Joy though… well, that was for the baby, right? *sigh*… guess I’ll go update that Finish and Diminish page. And the Project page while I’m at it… some shame will do me good.

Happy Lunar New Year! In celebration our creepy meneki neko (lucky cat)* has agreed to model the Sassy Striped Stocking Cap. *edit: fixed the link!*

This means I’ve gotten my hands on the camera! Behold, progress shots + hand painted yarn by me. The Spiders had a marathon dye session at Marie’s yesterday. So much fun! Take a run through our ring to see everyone else’s excellent results. Highlight of the day though? Amanda accidentally getting locked in the bathroom and me repeating it two minutes later! Classic.

Joy gave me 4 skeins of natural Handpainted Yarns and I went to town on a plan for the Pinwheel Baby Blanket that will start with a saturated color in the center and fan out to lighter shades of that color. Not my idea, I got it from JenLa! Her version is gorgeous and I hope mine will be too.

Yesterday, Joy brought a laundry bag of yarn to sell off before she moves (sniff) to Hawaii. I grabbed 4 skeins of pink alpaca (knit picks) and 5 skeins of lilac Cotton Ease for baby stuff!

It’s been a great weekend so far–and this is my first post from the mac! I am close to streamlining the photo tweak and upload process. wooo hooo!

*maneki neko is creepy because he is all gold, waves his hand and Sassy cat sits next to him for hours on end for no apparent reason.

Weekend Update…

For some reason, everytime Mr. Sassy put his hand on the remote for late night TV this weekend, we caught a little SNL weekend update. But this is not the point of my post. This weekend was fabulous! With an eye towards Finish & Dimish 2006 I cast on for a a second One Skein Wonder using some luscious yarn spun up by Scissorina Sarah. Since my first attempt came up just a bit snug, I am hoping this one will be a winner! The yarn is bulky and way fun to knit with! I think it’s going to come down to the wire on having enough for the trim though–i may need to find a complementary yarn. Any ideas? I suck at color coordination!

I got through most of the back during Roller Girls and a Sunday afternoon viewing of Strictly Ballroom with Lisa and Stephanie.

The sleeves of the Kaitlyn sweater are in progress and the body fits great! I think I’ll be able to wear this sweater post-pregnancy too, which is fab cuz its turning out to be gorgeous. I need to free up some Denise cordage to really make progress…

thank you for law & order marathons

If you were as unproductive as me this weekend, you may have been watching one of several Law & Order marathons on cable tv. And I am not including knitting in my being “unproductive”, just cleaning, cooking, moving, etc.

As a result:

Gotta check with Christine to see if progress pics of her pattern are good to go up on the site. In the meantime, I can tell you that Brooks Farm Duet is a fabulous fiber! The mohair content isn’t bothering me in the least.

My last post set no goals. I am not into it so I’m keeping it pretty big picture. I have, however, added a new page to the site called FINISH & DIMINISH to specifically address my stash hoarding and UFO issues in the coming year. It doesn’t tell the complete picture, but its still pretty daunting. I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me!

Crumpets

Isn’t it cute? Everyone should make one for the littlest lady in their lives! I should be done tonight–have I even mentioned that the Spiders have been spending a gratuitous amount of time at The Point this week? Between the subway, my lunch hour and my knitting time with the girls, the nine inches of stockinette has flown by. I was worried that I would finish it up tonight and be stuck without a new project so I got up and wound my Brooks Farm Primero this morning. I got three skeins (500 yds each) at Rhinebeck (read full post here) and have been planning to use it for the maternity sweater Christine designed in my honor (although, it would have been in her own honor had she been aware that she was also pregnant!)

Joey helped me.

First, she affectionately marked up the swift, ensuring that it will be “hers” until some other cat comes along to take posession.

The Sassy Cat was vehement… of course, if you are a cat, you already understand how important this step is to take with anything “new” in your home.

When is it not okay to laugh at your cat for having something stuck on them? Oh yea, the moment they realize that their dignity has been compromised.

I thought about leaving her with the string, but remembered that my sister’s cat had a very unfortunate experience with a ribbon a few weeks back in which said ribbon took the long way out of the situation. I have no interest in seeing two inches of yarn coming out of my cat’s a-hole, and I don’t think you do either.

stash take a vacation

This weekend I played with my yarn… and I brought the camera! I finally have update shots of the great swap yarn I picked up over the summer in CT. And, I moved my whole stash, previously “confined” to a large basket and four shopping bags, to the BIG SUITCASE. This suitecase is so heavy, you can hardly pack anything in it. As a result, we never take it on trips. So, yarn storage it shall be! Everything fit it very well (it’s double layered).

Stash on the Move

arts yarns fingering from the swap. An irresistable color!

more from the swap… i think I picked up some apple green lamb’s pride too… where could it be?

Attack of the Fun Fur! I received a b’day gift this summer of some chenille, fun fur and eyelash yarn.

the whole b’day caboodle

So, what to do with all that chenille and novelty stuff? Any ideas?

I am very slowly ticking things off my list of things to update on the blog. Holy moley, it took me all day to correctly install the Gallery plugin for Wordpress. It will be worth it in the end, but the learning curve is steep! Next phase is to figure out how to post my galleries in the sidebar with a little more sassiness than the text alone.

Thank you to everyone who has cast a vote for the baby poll so far! We are up to 18 votes and GIRL is ahead by five! I’ll let you in on a little secret… most people I run into in real life think it’s a boy. But I know what you guys are thinking… gilr knits are more fun! Well said, Marie
