Poinsettia Hat for Baby

I whipped up this hat to match the Ribbed Baby Jacket by Debbie Bliss. I felt I wanted something that coordinated, but was also a bit more feminine for a Spring baby. The motif is inspired by Erika Knight’s Lacy Bonnet.

Materials
Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton Ease (or equivalent), Sugarplum colorway pictured.
Needles: One size 7 27″ circular for Magic Loop method OR size 7 dpns. One size 6 27″ circular for Magic Loop method OR size 6 dpns.

Gauge
20 st/24 rows to 4 inches on larger needles.

Size
Newborn, 14″ circumference.

Stitch:
M1: From the back, lift the loop between stitches with left needle, knit into front of loop. This will create an invisible increase.

Pattern
1. Cast on 8 stitches. Divide evenly for Magic Loop or evenly between dpns. Mark beginning of round.

2. Make Poinsettia:
Row 1: *K1, yo, repeat from* to last stitch, k1
Row 2 and all alt rows: knit
Row 3: *K2, yo, repeat from* to last stitch, k1
Row 5: *K3, yo, repeat from* to last stitch, k1
Row 7: *K4, yo, repeat from* to last stitch, k1

Row 11: *K3, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, repeat from* to last stitch, k1
Row 13: *k2tog, yo, k7, yo, repeat from* to last stitch, k1. 71 stitches.

3. 10 rows knit.

4. Switch to smaller needle and knit 8 rows 2×2 rib.

5. Bind off evenly in rib.

Finishing
Weave in ends and steam block.
